Doctoral Position in Debris Flow Monitoring
Fully funded 4-year PhD position at ETH Zurich investigating debris flow mechanics using advanced point cloud and camera sensor data.
Best for:Best for Earth sciences or geotechnical engineering graduates with an interest in natural hazards, point cloud analysis, and field-based environmental monitoring.
Overview
The Engineering Geology Group at ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded, four-year doctoral position focusing on debris flow monitoring and natural hazard risk management. Working within the Geological Institute under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jordan Aaron, the successful candidate will analyze unique field data collected via robotics-derived sensors to estimate flow velocity and depth at high resolutions. Responsibilities include conducting fieldwork at five study sites, performing hypothesis-driven data analyses, and developing innovative management strategies for mountainous hazards. The project offers access to state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative environment that promotes academic and professional growth.
What you'll do
- Derive velocity and flow depth estimates at high spatial and temporal resolutions using point cloud and camera data
- Perform hypothesis-driven analyses of in-situ debris flow measurements to better understand motion mechanics
- Conduct field work to install, operate, and maintain monitoring systems across five designated study sites
- Investigate sediment transfer processes and synthesize findings to improve debris flow management frameworks
- Contribute to teaching assistantships and participate in collaborative group research initiatives
