PhD Fellowship in Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence
Develop advanced AI and machine learning models for real-time optimization and control of sustainable energy systems at the University of Stavanger.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in engineering or computer science with a strong foundation in machine learning, mathematical modeling, and sustainable energy systems.
Overview
The University of Stavanger invites applications for a three-year PhD fellowship focusing on the intersection of energy systems and applied artificial intelligence. Based at the Faculty of Science and Technology, the successful candidate will work at the university's Energy Central living laboratory utilizing extensive real-world operational data from geothermal boreholes and heat pumps. The project aims to build fast, robust models for real-time control, forecasting, and techno-economic optimization of integrated energy systems. Candidates are expected to conduct independent research, complete mandatory doctoral coursework, and participate actively in national and international academic communities.
What you'll do
- Formulate and execute an independent PhD research project combining artificial intelligence and energy systems engineering.
- Develop fast, accurate, and robust data-driven models and digital twins for real-time optimization and control of energy infrastructure.
- Incorporate forecasting methods and external data sources such as weather, fuel costs, and electricity prices into operational strategies.
- Utilize data generated from the university's Energy Central facility, including geothermal boreholes and heat pumps, for model validation.
- Complete the required doctoral coursework within the PhD programme in Science and Technology.
- Disseminate research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
- Contribute to academic collaboration across disciplines and participate actively in the research community.
