Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Nanofabrication
Join a QuIMS funded project at the University of Exeter to fabricate nanoscale devices for quantum technologies.
Best for:Best for physicists, materials scientists, or engineers with hands-on cleanroom nanofabrication experience and a background in quantum systems.
Overview
The University of Exeter invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the QuIMS (Quantum Information with Mechanical Systems) project within the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy. Working closely with Professor Saverio Russo, the successful candidate will conduct hands-on nanofabrication of nanoscale devices utilizing the university's advanced cleanroom and characterisation facilities. The role centers on device design, electron-beam lithography, material transfer, and the development of suspended structures to advance mechanical systems for quantum technologies. The appointment is available for a fixed term of two years beginning in December 2026, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact research, mentor junior researchers, and collaborate across disciplines.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate nanoscale devices using cleanroom and characterisation facilities
- Execute electron-beam lithography, material deposition, etching, material transfer, and create suspended structures
- Optimize fabrication process flows and characterize devices to improve yield and reproducibility
- Maintain meticulous process records and collaborate closely with experimental and theoretical colleagues
- Deliver research outputs, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, present findings, and aid in proposal writing
- Support and mentor less experienced researchers while championing safe laboratory practices and an inclusive work environment
