Overview

This PhD research project focuses on the thermodynamic modelling of chloride migration within concrete structures exposed to harsh environments. Using the geochemical software PHREEQC, the candidate will develop a reactive transport framework to simulate chloride penetration, binding mechanisms, and pore solution chemistry. The research involves validating these computational models against experimental data obtained from NT Build 492 Rapid Chloride Migration tests. The ultimate goal is to improve service-life prediction models for reinforced concrete infrastructure, enhancing durability design and maintenance strategies.

What you'll do

  • Develop a robust thermodynamic framework for simulating chloride transport in concrete using PHREEQC.
  • Conduct NT Build 492 Rapid Chloride Migration tests on various concrete specimens.
  • Analyze experimental chloride concentration profiles to calibrate and validate computational models.
  • Investigate the interaction between chloride ions and cement hydration products.
  • Document research findings and contribute to the development of improved service-life prediction models.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to refine modelling approaches and durability assessment tools.
