PhD Position in Material Science - Predictive Design of 3D Pulp Fibres
Transform fibre-based manufacturing from trial-and-error to predictive design using experiments and multiscale material characterisation.
Best for:Best for material science or mechanical engineering graduates with a strong background in experimental characterisation and continuum mechanics.
Overview
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral position focused on the predictive design of 3D-shaped products based on pulp fibres. The research project aims to transition fibre-based manufacturing methods into predictive engineering by combining physical experiments, mechanical analysis, and multiscale material characterisation. The successful candidate will investigate how fundamental fibre properties dictate deformability, damage accumulation, spring-back, and shape retention in advanced 3D forming processes. Applicants are expected to work collaboratively within a dynamic academic environment and engage in rigorous interdisciplinary research.
What you'll do
- Design and execute experimental protocols to evaluate the mechanical behaviour and properties of pulp fibres.
- Perform multiscale material characterisation to link microstructure with macroscopic deformation.
- Analyze how fibre properties influence damage mechanisms, spring-back, and shape retention during 3D forming.
- Integrate experimental findings with mechanical analysis and simulation frameworks.
- Collaborate with academic peers and industrial partners within the manufacturing and materials sectors.
- Disseminate research outcomes through peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations at international conferences.
