Two PhD Positions in Ring Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs)
Two PhD positions available at the University of Neuchâtel focusing on experimental characterization and theoretical modeling of ring quantum cascade lasers.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering master's graduates with a strong interest in laser physics, optics, and either experimental hardware setup or numerical simulation.
Overview
The Time-Frequency Laboratory (LTF) at the University of Neuchâtel, in collaboration with ETH Zurich, is offering two PhD positions within a newly funded SNSF project. One candidate will concentrate on experimental research to develop optical platforms and measure QCL noise and coherence, while the other will focus on theoretical modeling and numerical simulations of frequency comb dynamics in ring-resonator architectures. Both successful candidates will work closely together to investigate fundamental noise limits and advance mid-infrared laser technology. The positions involve limited teaching duties, international collaborations, and active dissemination of results at scientific conferences.
What you'll do
- Design and develop a versatile optical platform for high-resolution heterodyne characterization of quantum cascade lasers.
- Perform frequency conversion and optical measurements to investigate frequency noise, linewidth, and comb coherence.
- Develop theoretical frameworks and analytical models describing noise generation and stabilization in ring-resonator architectures.
- Conduct numerical simulations of frequency comb dynamics and validate theoretical predictions through targeted experiments.
- Collaborate closely with team members across the Time-Frequency Laboratory and ETH Zurich.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present outcomes at national and international conferences.
- Prepare periodic progress reports for the funding agency and contribute to limited teaching activities at the university.
