PhD Position in AI/ML for Archaeological Surface Metrology
Develop cutting-edge AI/ML methods to analyze 3D surface texture data from prehistoric tools using confocal microscopy.
Best for:Best for AI/ML researchers with a strong quantitative background in computer science, physics, or mathematics, eager to apply computational methods to archaeological data.
Overview
This PhD position at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Barcelona focuses on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to archaeological research. The candidate will work on the ERC Advanced Grant project **HIDTECH**, leveraging quantitative 3D surface texture data from confocal microscopy to uncover how prehistoric tools were used and reconstruct lost technologies. The interdisciplinary project bridges AI, 3D imaging, surface metrology, and archaeology, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to both computational and historical sciences. The successful applicant will collaborate with a team of researchers at IMF-CSIC, ICMAT-CSIC, and ULPGC, advancing interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of prehistoric technology.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply AI/ML algorithms to analyze quantitative 3D surface texture data from confocal microscopy.
- Investigate how prehistoric tools were used based on surface texture patterns.
- Reconstruct lost technologies that rarely survive archaeologically.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of archaeologists, physicists, and computer scientists.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
- Contribute to the ERC Advanced Grant project HIDTECH, focusing on gendered work and perishable technologies in prehistory.
