PhD Position in Self-Designing Digital Twins for Transportation Systems
Develop autonomous control theory frameworks for self-configuring digital twins of transportation infrastructure.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in systems and control, applied mathematics, or computer science, who are passionate about bridging theoretical control theory with practical digital twin applications in transportation systems.
Overview
This PhD position at Delft University of Technology focuses on advancing digital twin technology for transportation systems by creating self-designing frameworks rooted in formal control theory. The project aims to address the complexity of digital twins through automated design of mathematical contracts, controller parametrization, and stability verification. The successful candidate will contribute to both theoretical advancements and practical applications, leveraging control theory, machine learning, and transportation engineering. The work will be conducted at the Delft Centre of Systems and Control (DCSC), a leading hub for systems and control research at TU Delft, with supervision from Dr. Carlo Cenedese and Dr. Manuel Mazo. The role offers a dynamic environment with opportunities to collaborate on state-of-the-art digital twin systems for mobility.
What you'll do
- Develop theoretical frameworks for autonomous design of formal mathematical contracts for digital twins based on system descriptions and functional requirements.
- Design methods for automatically selecting and configuring controllers to ensure stability and performance, using federated and scenario-based approaches.
- Theorize and implement control policies for complex systems, including Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Reinforcement Learning (RL).
- Investigate the effects of interconnecting digital twins of different systems on their stability and performance.
- Improve state-of-the-art advanced digital twin models for transportation systems, particularly those based on SUMO.
- Collaborate with the Delft Centre of Systems and Control (DCSC) to advance research in systems dynamics, control theory, and optimization.
- Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals and present results at international conferences.
