Climate Scientist
Join the British Antarctic Survey to research rainfall and its impacts on Antarctic sea ice.
Best for:Best for climate scientists with a PhD in atmospheric or geoscience and strong experience in numerical modeling and dataset analysis.
Overview
The British Antarctic Survey is seeking a Climate Scientist to join the Atmosphere, Ice, and Climate team for a fixed-term project investigating rainfall over Antarctic sea ice and its consequences. The successful candidate will analyze regional climate models and observational data to quantify current rainfall occurrences and develop future climate projections. Responsibilities include statistical data analysis, model comparison, collaboration with international research partners, and leading scientific publications. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD and demonstrate strong quantitative and climate modeling skills.
What you'll do
- Compare regional climate model datasets against observational data, such as cloud profiling radar products, to identify top-performing datasets.
- Quantify present-day occurrences of rain and snowfall over Antarctic sea ice using validated model outputs.
- Apply advanced statistical techniques and reanalysis datasets to evaluate atmospheric processes and modes of variability linked to rainfall events.
- Select and utilize global climate models to generate improved rainfall projections up to the year 2100.
- Participate actively in project meetings and present research findings at international scientific conferences.
- Lead the drafting and publication of peer-reviewed scientific research papers.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in atmospheric sciences, geosciences, or another relevant subject
Language: English; proficient in written and spoken English
