PhD Candidate in Advanced Welding for Recycled Aluminium
Investigate advanced arc and friction stir welding processes for recycled aluminium within the SFI FAST research centre.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in materials or mechanical engineering with a strong background in welding metallurgy and materials characterization.
Overview
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position starting in 2027. The successful candidate will join the SFI FAST research centre to study how impurities in post-consumer scrap aluminium affect weldability, microstructure, and mechanical performance. The project involves developing conventional and novel welding methodologies, thermodynamic modeling, and advanced materials characterization. The researcher is expected to complete a doctoral degree, publish peer-reviewed papers, and collaborate closely with industrial and academic partners.
What you'll do
- Complete the doctoral education programme and obtain a doctorate within the 3-year period
- Develop arc welding (GTAW and GMAW) and friction stir welding processes for aluminium alloys with varying impurity levels
- Investigate the influence of impurities on weld physics, defect formation, microstructure, and mechanical and corrosion performance
- Perform thermodynamic modeling of solidification and precipitation behavior in recycled aluminium
- Design and conduct weldability tests to quantify the mechanical performance of aluminium alloys
- Perform advanced materials characterization using SEM, FIB, EBSD, and Laser Confocal Microscopy
- Publish high-level research findings in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences
- Collaborate with industrial and academic partners, contributing to SFI FAST activities and mentoring master's students
