PhD: Advanced NMR of Sodium Battery Interfaces
Pursue a doctoral thesis investigating buried electrode-electrolyte interphases and degradation mechanisms in sodium-ion batteries using advanced solid-state and liquid NMR.
Best for:Best for chemistry or materials science graduates with a strong background in electrochemistry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Overview
CIC energiGUNE is recruiting a PhD candidate to join the NMR Platform within the Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion (EESC) area. The successful candidate will focus on studying solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) formation in next-generation sodium-ion batteries. Responsibilities include designing electrochemical experiments, implementing solid-state and in-situ NMR methodologies, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The role provides an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge energy storage research and publish scientific papers in international venues.
What you'll do
- Design and execute electrochemical experiments in sodium-based battery systems including coin cells and electrolyte formulations
- Develop and apply solid-state NMR methodologies, covering static and MAS techniques, to study SEI and CEI evolution
- Implement in-situ and operando NMR experiments under realistic electrochemical operating conditions
- Analyze electrolyte degradation products using liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance
- Correlate spectroscopic measurements with overall electrochemical performance and degradation pathways
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary research teams utilizing complementary techniques such as XPS, TEM, and SEM
- Prepare scientific publications and present research findings at international conferences
