PhD Studentship: Plasmodesmal Connectivity and Plant Immunity
Investigate how cell-to-cell connections in plants regulate pathogen responses and immune success.
Best for:Best for biology or life sciences graduates with a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, or plant science.
Overview
This 4-year PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia investigates the role of plasmodesmata—tubes connecting plant cells—in mediating plant immune responses to pathogens. The successful candidate will join the Faulkner lab to explore how cellular connectivity and sugar production influence plant defense mechanisms. The project combines molecular biology, bioinformatics, genetics, and quantitative imaging approaches to generate novel insights into plant pathology. The student will receive full tuition coverage, a competitive living stipend, and a dedicated research training support grant.
What you'll do
- Design and execute experimental studies investigating plasmodesmal function and plant-pathogen interactions.
- Utilize molecular biology, genetics, and quantitative imaging techniques to analyze plant cellular responses.
- Apply bioinformatics tools to examine immune-associated gene expression changes and connectivity data.
- Generate and test novel scientific hypotheses regarding sugar production and cell isolation mechanisms.
- Analyze experimental data, maintain accurate laboratory records, and prepare findings for publication.
- Collaborate with researchers within the Faulkner lab and broader Norwich Research Park community.
