Overview

This PhD studentship is offered within the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, supported by the ARIES doctoral training partnership. The research focuses on decoding the magmatic flow dynamics, emplacement mechanisms, and associated Fe-Ti oxide ore bodies of the Rogaland Anorthosite Complex in southern Norway. The selected candidate will combine intensive fieldwork, modern petrographic analysis, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), magnetic fabric analysis, and mineral chemistry. The project provides bespoke, one-to-one laboratory training alongside access to professional development opportunities within the ARIES program.

What you'll do

  • Conduct two weeks of geological fieldwork in the Egersund-Ogna pluton, southwest Norway, during the first year.
  • Perform detailed petrographic analyses and microstructural characterization of rock samples.
  • Execute electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and electron microprobe analyses to determine mineral chemistry.
  • Carry out magnetic fabric analysis to investigate dynamic flow regimes within large anorthosite plutons.
  • Synthesize structural, mineralogical, and spatial data to model the emplacement mechanism of the massif and its ore bodies.
