PhD candidate in Nanoscience: Nonlinear Casimir-Optomechanics
Investigate nonlinear mechanical and optomechanical phenomena in silicon-on-insulator nanophotonic cavities.
Best for:Best for physics or photonics graduates with strong optical laboratory skills and an interest in nanomechanics.
Overview
The Electronics and Biomedics Engineering Department at the Universitat de Barcelona invites applications for a fully funded doctoral position in nanoscience. The research project focuses on exploring nonlinear mechanical and optomechanical phenomena in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanophotonic cavities, specifically examining how Casimir-Lifshitz forces modify effective mechanical stiffness and nonlinear dynamics. The candidate will engage in designing, simulating, and experimentally characterizing optomechanical cavities, while collaborating with international partners through structured secondments. Expected outcomes include rigorous scientific experimentation, active participation in research group meetings, and contributions to high-impact publications.
What you'll do
- Design and investigate silicon-on-insulator photonic-crystal and slot cavities
- Perform optical and radio-frequency characterization of nanostructures
- Analyze nonlinear mechanical dynamics and compare empirical data with theoretical models
- Prepare scientific publications, conference presentations, and project reports
- Participate actively in research activities and scientific meetings of the research group
- Complete secondments at partner institutions including Danmarks Tekniske Universitet and Lizard Photonics ApS
