MSc in Physics (Bonn-Cologne Graduate School)
A research-focused Master’s in Physics with specialisations in particle physics, photonics, and condensed matter at two leading German universities.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with a strong background in experimental and theoretical physics, seeking a research-intensive Master’s programme with opportunities for interdisciplinary study and potential PhD continuation.
Overview
The Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy offers a Master of Science in Physics programme jointly run by the University of Bonn and the University of Cologne. This programme focuses on theoretical and experimental particle and hadron physics, photonics, condensed matter physics, and mathematical physics. Students engage in advanced coursework, laboratory work, and research-oriented projects, including mandatory research internships. The programme is designed to provide a strong foundation in physics while encouraging interdisciplinary learning through elective courses and collaborations with international partners. Successful students may transition into doctoral studies within the same graduate school.
What you'll do
- Complete one year of coursework including compulsory theoretical and experimental lecture courses, laboratory work, and advanced seminars in particle physics, condensed matter, and photonics.
- Engage in a research-oriented Master’s thesis project during the second year, involving project planning and execution under faculty supervision.
- Participate in at least one mandatory research internship (4–6 weeks) as part of the graduate school’s research training programme.
- Attend interdisciplinary courses to broaden expertise in neighbouring fields, such as astrophysics or related disciplines.
- Collaborate with international guest lecturers and research partners in Germany and abroad.
