Assistant Scientist - AI-Enabled Immune Digital Twin & Organ Damage Mechanistic Model
Develop mechanistic and AI-enabled digital twin models for critical illness and organ damage at Indiana University Bloomington.
Best for:Best for computational scientists with experience in mechanistic modeling, dynamical systems, and Python or MATLAB programming.
Overview
The Biocomplexity Institute at Indiana University Bloomington invites applications for an Assistant Scientist position focusing on AI-enabled immune digital twins and organ damage mechanistic models under the direction of Dr. James A. Glazier. The successful candidate will build interpretable model components that connect immune-state dynamics with organ-damage risks in vital organs such as the lungs, kidneys, and liver during critical illnesses. Responsibilities include mapping clinical time-series and biomarkers to model states, establishing scoring criteria, collaborating with multi-institutional consortium partners, and authoring technical publications. This non-tenure-track appointment offers an annual salary of $100,000 and requires expertise in computational modeling and quantitative biomedical sciences.
What you'll do
- Design and implement fast, interpretable ODE, network, and mechanistic model modules linking immune dysfunction to organ injury
- Map clinical time-series datasets and biomarkers to corresponding model states
- Establish biological plausibility and scoring criteria for digital twin ensembles
- Prepare comprehensive test cases, model packages, and model cards for consortium review
- Draft technical research papers and present scientific findings to national consortium partners and stakeholders
- Contribute to milestone-ready contract deliverables in collaboration with systems biology and clinical data science groups
Requirements
Degree required: PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a quantitative, computational, or biomedical discipline
Language: English; professional proficiency required for technical writing and presentations
Instruction: English
Publications: Record of technical publications commensurate with experience
- Programming proficiency in Python, Julia, R, or MATLAB
- Demonstrated background in mechanistic modeling including ODEs, dynamical systems, quantitative systems pharmacology, or agent-based modeling
- Familiarity with inflammation, cytokine signaling, sepsis, or critical care biology
- Minimum of one year of successful postdoctoral research experience
- Must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree prior to appointment
- Must have completed at least one year of postdoctoral research experience
