PhD Position in Rare-Earth Based Quantum Memory
Explore novel quantum memory solutions using ytterbium-doped CaWO₄ for high-coherence spin ensembles in quantum computing.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with a strong background in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, and experimental research, seeking to advance quantum memory technologies with industry collaboration.
Overview
This PhD position at Ecole normale supérieure de Lyon focuses on developing rare-earth based quantum memory systems, specifically ytterbium atoms embedded in calcium tungstate (CaWO₄). The project aims to overcome current limitations in quantum memory efficiency by leveraging a novel spin system that maintains state-of-the-art coherence at higher concentrations. The research will involve testing advanced deposition techniques, benchmarking quantum field storage, and collaborating with industry partners to integrate spin ensembles with superconducting qubits. The successful candidate will contribute to breakthroughs in quantum repeaters, parallel quantum processing, and high-precision measurements, with potential for on-chip integration in quantum computing architectures.
What you'll do
- Develop and test novel deposition techniques to enhance spin-resonator coupling in ytterbium-doped CaWO₄ crystals.
- Benchmark the storage efficiency of classical and quantum fields within spin ensembles, aiming to surpass current <10% efficiency limits.
- Collaborate with ChimieTech to synthesize CaWO₄ crystals and with PStash to integrate spin ensembles with superconducting qubits.
- Conduct experimental research to explore zero-magnetic-field operation compatibility with superconducting qubits.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.
- Optionally relocate to Paris for experimental efforts at a later stage of the project.
