PhD Studentship: Antarctic Glacial Meltwater and Ocean Circulation
Investigate Antarctic glacial meltwater pathways and their impact on global ocean circulation using autonomous robotics and models.
Best for:Best for aspiring oceanographers and physical scientists with strong quantitative skills and an interest in polar climate dynamics.
Overview
The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship focused on tracing Antarctic glacial meltwater and assessing its influence on global ocean circulation and climate. The successful candidate will analyze observational oceanographic data from ships, profiling floats, tagged seals, and ocean gliders, alongside state-of-the-art numerical models. The project offers comprehensive training in physical oceanography, ice-ocean interactions, and big-data science, with potential opportunities for sea-going fieldwork and glider deployments. The research is part of the NERC-funded BELLISSIMO project, preparing candidates for careers in ocean and climate research, marine industries, or environmental consultancy.
What you'll do
- Analyze new and historical oceanographic measurements from ships, floats, and autonomous underwater gliders to quantify meltwater flows in the Bellingshausen Sea.
- Develop advanced oceanographic understanding of the physical processes controlling meltwater dispersion and ice shelf interactions.
- Utilize output from state-of-the-art ocean models to investigate multi-decadal variability in ocean processes.
- Participate in specialized training courses, fluid dynamics summer schools, and collaborative meetings within the NERC BELLISSIMO project.
- Engage in potential sea-going research cruises and deploy ocean gliders for data collection, subject to medical clearance.
