PhD Fellowship in Urban Climate and Air Pollution Observation & Modelling
Join a research group at the National University of Singapore to study urban climate and air quality in high-density tropical environments.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in atmospheric science, geography, or environmental engineering and a strong interest in urban climate modelling and field measurements.
Overview
The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore invites applications for a four-year PhD fellowship starting in August 2027. Working under the supervision of Professor Mengze Li, the successful candidate will investigate the atmospheric environment of high-rise, high-density tropical cities. The research will integrate field observations, multi-source geospatial data, and advanced numerical or machine learning models. Applicants are expected to develop an original research proposal that aligns with the group's focus on urban form, heat, and air pollution dynamics. This position offers an opportunity to conduct high-impact research in a unique, internationally oriented urban laboratory.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research on urban climate and air quality in high-density environments.
- Develop and execute an original PhD research proposal in collaboration with the supervisor.
- Perform field observations using environmental sensors and research-grade instrumentation.
- Integrate multi-source data including satellite imagery, GIS, and meteorological datasets.
- Develop and apply process-based numerical models or machine learning approaches for environmental simulation.
- Participate in the active research community within the Department of Geography.
- Prepare scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements
Degree required: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science/Engineering, Physics, Data Science, or a related field.
Degree offered: PhD
Language: English; IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 (with at least 22 in writing) for non-native speakers from non-English-speaking universities.
Instruction: English
Publications: At least one manuscript submitted or published in a peer-reviewed journal is strongly preferred.
- Substantial previous research experience (at least two projects of six months or longer).
- Strong scientific writing and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to conduct independent research and develop original proposals.
- Interest in combining observational data with quantitative modelling.
- Willingness to participate in field measurements in tropical urban environments.
- Open to candidates worldwide.
- Must meet NUS scholarship conditions and maintain satisfactory academic progress.
