PhD Position in AI-Assisted High-Pressure Microfluidics for CO₂ Capture and Utilization
Develop cutting-edge microfluidic platforms for CO₂ capture, transport, and valorization with AI-driven data analysis and industrial collaboration.
Best for:Best for interdisciplinary PhD candidates with a background in chemical engineering, physics, or materials science, passionate about sustainable technologies and AI-driven experimental research.
Overview
This PhD position within the PRISM programme at École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris (PSL) focuses on advancing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. The project aims to design a high-pressure microfluidic platform capable of operating under extreme conditions (up to 100 bar, -25°C to 80°C) to study reactive, corrosive, and multiphase fluids. The research integrates microfluidics, spectroscopy, machine learning, and chemical engineering to address critical challenges in CO₂ transport, solvent loading, and controlled precipitation for industrial applications. The candidate will benefit from interdisciplinary training, international mobility, and collaboration with TotalEnergies, ensuring both academic rigor and practical relevance.
What you'll do
- Design and develop a high-pressure microfluidic platform capable of operating under extreme conditions (up to 100 bar, -25°C to 80°C) for studying reactive and corrosive fluids.
- Couple the microfluidic platform with in-situ analytical tools such as micro-Raman spectroscopy, optical imaging, and pressure/flow/temperature control systems.
- Apply machine learning algorithms for data analysis, autonomous optimization, and predictive modeling of CCUS processes.
- Conduct three key use cases: assessing corrosion risk during CO₂ transport, monitoring solvent loading in CO₂ capture processes, and investigating controlled CaCO₃ precipitation for CO₂ valorization.
- Collaborate with TotalEnergies to integrate industrial constraints, safety requirements, and practical applications into the research.
- Undertake a mandatory international secondment (minimum one month) at either the University of Amsterdam or the University of Toronto for specialized training.
- Participate in interdisciplinary training programs focused on sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and career development.
