Predoctoral Research Contract in Galactic Archaeology (ChronoGal)
Join the IAC’s ChronoGal project to reconstruct the Milky Way bulge’s star formation history using cutting-edge astrophysical data.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in astronomy, astrophysics, or related fields with strong programming skills and a passion for Galactic archaeology and data-driven research.
Overview
This predoctoral position at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) offers a fully funded opportunity to investigate the stellar populations of the Milky Way bulge. Under the supervision of Professor Carme Gallart, the successful candidate will reconstruct the star formation history using advanced data from Rubin/LSST and the Roman Space Telescope. The project emphasizes automated photometry and data-analysis pipelines, requiring strong programming skills. The position is based at the IAC headquarters in La Laguna, Tenerife, within a collaborative research group focused on Galactic archaeology and near-field cosmology. The contract is part of the ERC-funded ChronoGal project, providing a stimulating environment for doctoral research in astrophysics.
What you'll do
- Reconstruct the star formation history of the Milky Way bulge using advanced astronomical data from Rubin/LSST and the Roman Space Telescope.
- Develop and implement automated photometry techniques from images acquired by these surveys.
- Design and build data-analysis pipelines for processing large-scale astronomical datasets.
- Conduct research within the ‘Galaxy Evolution in the Local Group’ group, collaborating with the ‘Numerical Astrophysics’ group.
- Present research findings at conferences and workshops, and contribute to scientific publications.
- Participate in a dynamic research environment focused on observational and theoretical Galactic archaeology.
