PhD Position in Characterization and Modelling of Particle Flow Properties
Develop advanced 3D numerical models to simulate pharmaceutical manufacturing processes like hot-melt extrusion and twin-screw melt granulation.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with a strong background in chemical, mechanical, or materials engineering and an interest in multiphase flow simulations.
Overview
The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague is offering a PhD position focused on characterizing and modelling particle flow properties. The project bridges experimental work with discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to optimize pharmaceutical manufacturing processes such as hot-melt extrusion and twin-screw melt granulation. The successful candidate will integrate particle-level surface properties and multiscale modelling approaches to evaluate how operating parameters influence final material characteristics. The research involves collaborating closely with experimental PhD students to build a comprehensive 3D process model for pilot-scale equipment scale-up.
What you'll do
- Perform particle-level surface property characterization and integrate findings into numerical simulations
- Develop and execute discrete element method (DEM) simulations to model powder flow during extrusion and granulation
- Couple DEM simulations of extruders with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of molten material
- Adjust particle contact mechanics and adhesion models based on varying temperature and processing conditions
- Collaborate with experimental researchers to combine simulation outcomes with laboratory data
- Construct a comprehensive 3D process model to support scale-up to pilot-scale manufacturing equipment
