PhD in Multi-scale Ultrasonic Propagation in Inhomogeneous Media
Develop advanced simulation strategies and theoretical frameworks for ultrasonic wave propagation in complex, inhomogeneous materials.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering graduates with a strong foundation in wave propagation, numerical simulation, and acoustic modeling.
Overview
This doctoral position focuses on investigating how ultrasonic waves are influenced by material microstructures, addressing challenges in non-destructive testing where structural variations impact defect detection. The project is hosted at Sorbonne University within the Laboratoire de Simulation, Modélisation et Analyse. The candidate will establish a theoretical framework accounting for microstructural randomness and spatial variations across 1D, 2D, and 3D scales. Responsibilities include analytical modeling, numerical simulations, and laboratory-based experimental validation. The successful applicant will work closely with research staff to advance simulation tools for complex scattering media.
What you'll do
- Develop theoretical frameworks for ultrasonic wave propagation accounting for microstructural randomness and spatial variations.
- Formulate analytical and numerical models starting in 1D and extending to 2D and 3D geometries.
- Implement and utilize existing laboratory simulation tools to test propagation hypotheses.
- Perform numerical and experimental validations of the proposed simulation models.
- Collaborate with laboratory researchers to analyze attenuation, dispersion, and noise in scattering media.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree or equivalent in Acoustics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering
Degree offered: PhD
