PhD Studentship: Developing and applying camera monitoring tools for inshore fish assemblages
Develop underwater camera networks and AI-based video processing workflows to monitor inshore fish habitats and support sustainable fisheries management.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in marine science or ecology who are enthusiastic about applying AI and camera technology to conservation challenges.
Overview
The University of Plymouth is offering a four-year PhD studentship focused on the development and deployment of underwater camera systems to monitor inshore fish assemblages. This project aims to improve our understanding of juvenile fish habitat use within the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and protected areas. The successful candidate will implement a camera network to capture long-term data and develop automated AI-based workflows to process video footage, addressing a major bottleneck in marine monitoring. This collaborative research with Natural England provides a unique opportunity to translate innovative technology into practical conservation and fisheries management policy. The student will receive interdisciplinary training in coastal sampling, scientific diving, digital technologies, and computer vision.
What you'll do
- Design and deploy a network of underwater video cameras in inshore habitat mosaics.
- Collect and analyze long-term data on fish habitat use and environmental drivers.
- Develop and refine automated AI-based workflows for processing large volumes of video data.
- Collaborate with Natural England to translate research findings into management and policy practice.
- Participate in coastal fish sampling and scientific diving activities.
- Disseminate research findings through academic publications and reports.
