PhD Studentship - Mechanosensitive Nanochannels
Develop artificial nanochannels that mimic mechanosensitive receptors using cutting‑edge 2D materials.
Best for:Best for physics, materials science or nanotechnology graduates with hands‑on experience in 2D material fabrication and an interest in biomimetic sensor design.
Overview
The University of Manchester invites applications for a fully funded 3.5‑year PhD project on mechanosensitive nanochannels. Supervised by Prof Radha Boya in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the research aims to create artificial nano‑scale channels that replicate the touch, force and pressure sensing of human skin. The work will involve designing variable‑sensitivity nanochannels, engineering selective ion permeability, and integrating signal‑processing mechanisms to translate ion flows into electrical signals. Candidates will conduct experiments with graphene and other two‑dimensional materials, analyse mechanical‑deformation responses, and produce a thesis presenting novel biomimetic sensor technologies.
What you'll do
- Design nanochannels whose ion flow can be modulated by different magnitudes of mechanical stress.
- Engineer selective ion permeability by controlling size, shape and chemical functionalisation of the channels.
- Integrate signal‑processing circuitry to convert ion‑flow patterns into distinct electrical outputs.
- Fabricate and characterise nanochannels using graphene and other two‑dimensional materials.
- Perform mechanical deformation experiments and analyse the resulting ion‑transport data.
- Document experimental procedures, results and write a doctoral thesis presenting the findings.
