PhD on Numerical Modelling of Subsurface Erosion in Dikes and Geothermal Wells
Explore hidden soil failure processes and develop coupled hydro-mechanical FEM models to safeguard infrastructure and geothermal systems.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in civil or mechanical engineering with a strong background in applied or computational mechanics and a keen interest in geotechnical hazards.
Overview
This 4-year PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology investigates critical subsurface erosion challenges, specifically sand production in geothermal boreholes and backward erosion piping in dikes. The candidate will combine advanced finite element modelling with small- and medium-scale laboratory experimentation to understand internal erosion mechanisms. Embedded within the BEHeaT program and supported jointly by the Applied Mechanics and Engineering Thermodynamics groups, the project aims to build practical prediction tools for engineering applications. Responsibilities include conducting independent research, publishing findings, collaborating with academic and industrial partners, and fulfilling teaching duties.
What you'll do
- Develop and extend coupled hydro-mechanical erosion models using advanced finite element methods.
- Design and execute small- and medium-scale laboratory experiments to calibrate numerical simulations.
- Investigate the effects of soil properties, flow paths, and scale on internal erosion phenomena.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, academic researchers, and industrial partners.
- Contribute to teaching and student coaching tasks for up to 10% to 15% of the employment time.
- Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and present work at international conferences.
