PhD Position: Synthetic Cells and Active Transcriptional Condensates
Build DNA-based synthetic cells and investigate transcriptional condensates using synthetic biology and DNA nanoscience.
Best for:Best for life science and chemistry graduates with a strong interest in synthetic biology, DNA nanoscience, and quantitative microscopy.
Overview
The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz is offering a fully funded doctoral position at the Institute of Molecular Biology. Working within the research group of Andreas Walther and in collaboration with Jan Padeken, the successful candidate will explore how condensate organisation and transcription shape each other using DNA-based synthetic cells and protonuclei. The project combines synthetic biology, DNA nanoscience, and advanced microscopy in an interdisciplinary environment. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate a strong commitment to collaborative, cross-disciplinary scientific research.
What you'll do
- Design and construct barcoded and multi-compartment DNA protonuclei to position genes, polymerases, and enzymes with molecular precision.
- Execute and quantify transcription processes within synthetic cells, tracking RNA production and condensate dynamics via confocal microscopy and FRAP.
- Evaluate how the C-terminal domain, transcription factors, and kinases or phosphatases regulate transcriptional output.
- Investigate the feedback mechanisms of nascent RNA on cellular condensates.
- Collaborate closely with simulation and in vivo research partners within the CRC/SFB 1551 consortium.
