PhD Position in Acoustics: Experimental and Theoretical Study of Double Reeds
Investigate historical double-reed instruments through physical measurements and advanced acoustic modeling.
Best for:Best for physics or acoustics graduates with strong experimental skills and an interest in musical acoustics.
Overview
Le Mans Université is offering a doctoral position within the LAUM laboratory focusing on the experimental and theoretical study of double reeds for the bombard and biniou. Supported by an ANR-funded collaborative project, the researcher will develop measurement setups, characterize historical instruments and reeds, and construct physical models to reconstruct early 20th-century Breton musical temperaments. The successful candidate will work alongside an interdisciplinary team combining acoustics, signal processing, and musicology. Applicants are expected to conduct rigorous laboratory measurements, adapt existing mathematical models of reed behavior, and contribute to broader project deliverables.
What you'll do
- Design and construct specialized measurement setups for characterizing double reeds and resonators.
- Conduct experimental measurements on period instruments and reeds under both quasi-static and self-sustained oscillation conditions using an artificial player.
- Develop and adapt physical models to accurately describe reed behavior and predict playing frequencies.
- Analyze collected acoustic data and integrate findings with historical recordings and musicological analyses.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary project partners across acoustics, signal processing, and musicology.
