PhD candidate: Reading Ecosystems from Space
Join an interdisciplinary project using hyperspectral remote sensing to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health under nitrogen stress.
Best for:Best for candidates with an MSc in ecology or environmental science, combining field experience with remote sensing skills.
Overview
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) is seeking a PhD candidate for the ASCENT project, which focuses on using hyperspectral Earth Observation data to monitor ecosystem responses to nitrogen deposition. You will work within an interdisciplinary team of ecologists, remote sensing experts, and data scientists to quantify Essential Biodiversity Variables in grasslands and forests. The role involves conducting field experiments, analyzing airborne and satellite spectral data, and integrating these findings into predictive models. You will be expected to publish your research in a thesis and peer-reviewed journals while participating in international conferences. This position offers a collaborative environment aimed at advancing ecological monitoring techniques.
What you'll do
- Quantify Essential Biodiversity Variables and plant traits in response to nitrogen deposition.
- Conduct field sampling and chemical laboratory analysis in grassland and forest ecosystems.
- Process and analyze airborne and satellite hyperspectral Earth Observation data.
- Integrate ecological and remote sensing data into models to predict ecosystem functioning.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of remote sensers, ecologists, and data scientists.
- Publish research findings in a PhD thesis and peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Present research results at consortium meetings and international conferences.
