PhD Position in Plant-Associated Fungal Biogeography on the Galápagos Islands
Uncover plant-fungal interactions and microbiome biogeography of endemic Scalesia species in the Galápagos archipelago.
Best for:Best for aspiring microbial ecologists with a background in mycology, molecular biology, and computational or field-based ecological research.
Overview
This 4-year fully funded PhD position investigates the diversity, composition, and biogeographic patterns of fungi associated with endemic Scalesia species in the Galápagos islands. Jointly hosted by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) and the University of San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), the research combines molecular biology, bioinformatics, and field experiments. The candidate will explore above- and belowground fungal communities to understand their role in plant success and ecosystem restoration. Mentored by an expert interdisciplinary team, the successful applicant will also participate in the PE&RC graduate school.
What you'll do
- Investigate the taxonomic and functional diversity of above- and belowground fungi associated with Scalesia species across different islands and host plants.
- Examine three key fungal microbiome components: arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, yeasts, and fungal pathogens within soils, roots, and leaves.
- Conduct field sampling expeditions and greenhouse experiments both at NIOO-KNAW and internationally.
- Perform molecular laboratory work, bioinformatics processing, and statistical data analyses.
- Assess how fungal communities promote the dominance, competitive ability, and resilience of Scalesia species during seed germination and seedling growth.
- Collaborate closely with international partners, including European and Ecuadorian students and researchers.
- Participate in graduate school training, departmental seminars, science lunches, and journal clubs.
