PhD in Acoustic Performance of Timber Structure Connections
Develop advanced numerical models to improve sound insulation in sustainable timber buildings through a joint TU/e-DTU project.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in acoustics, civil engineering, or related fields with a passion for computational modeling and sustainable construction.
Overview
This PhD position focuses on enhancing the acoustic performance of timber buildings by investigating how different structural connections (e.g., screws, nails, adhesives) affect sound transmission. The project, part of the QUIET-ARC initiative under the EuroTech Universities PhD programme, aims to create computationally efficient yet physically accurate models to address variability in sound insulation. The successful candidate will collaborate between Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), spending time at both institutions. The research directly supports sustainable construction by improving predictive tools for low-carbon building materials, addressing a critical barrier to their adoption.
What you'll do
- Investigate how different connection types (e.g., screws, nails, adhesives) influence sound transmission in timber buildings.
- Develop efficient numerical simulation methods to model acoustic effects of structural connections while balancing physical accuracy and computational feasibility.
- Quantify uncertainty introduced by construction variability in acoustic predictions.
- Collaborate with researchers at TU/e and DTU, including a six-month research stay at DTU’s Acoustic Technology group.
- Contribute to teaching tasks (10-15% of time) and mentor students as part of the PhD programme.
- Publish findings in academic journals and present research at conferences.
