PhD on Telecom Infrastructure Resilience to Climate Change
Build data-driven models to evaluate and improve telecommunications network resilience against climate extremes.
Best for:Best for computer science or data science master's graduates with a strong interest in telecommunications networks and machine learning.
Overview
This doctoral position at Inria Sophia Antipolis investigates how climate change impacts telecommunications infrastructures. Operating across the COATI and SIGNET research teams and funded by the PEPR Carecloud project, the researcher will develop automated, data-driven methodologies to assess network vulnerability and cascading failures. The project involves analyzing massive spatio-temporal datasets, modeling causal relationships between weather events and network disruptions, and proposing future-proof optimization strategies. The successful candidate is expected to publish research findings and help design robust next-generation network architectures.
What you'll do
- Aggregate and couple large-scale weather time series, network outage reports, and performance metrics across France
- Develop standardized metrics to quantify the weather and climate vulnerability of network equipment and nodes
- Design statistical and machine learning models to identify root causes of incidents and trace cascading failures
- Incorporate cross-dependencies with critical infrastructure such as electrical power distribution networks
- Simulate network behavior under future climate extreme scenarios derived from IPCC projections
- Formulate optimization strategies including equipment hardening, dynamic routing, and network redeployment
