Research Grant in Intertidal Wetland Restoration and Carbon Sequestration
Join the REWRITE Project to investigate carbon dynamics and ecological restoration in coastal wetlands.
Best for:Best for early-career researchers with a master’s degree in biology, ecology, or environmental science and hands-on experience in carbon sampling, greenhouse gas emissions quantification, and wetland restoration.
Overview
This research grant at the University of Aveiro’s Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) focuses on the REWRITE Project, which explores the ecological and biogeochemical impacts of rewilding and restoration in intertidal wetlands. The successful candidate will contribute to quantifying carbon stocks, greenhouse gas emissions, and stakeholder-driven restoration strategies in salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and mudflats. The work involves fieldwork, data analysis, and collaboration with international partners to enhance ecosystem resilience and blue-carbon storage. The position is ideal for early-career researchers with expertise in sediment ecology, greenhouse gas quantification, and wetland restoration.
What you'll do
- Conduct fieldwork to quantify carbon stocks and greenhouse gas fluxes in natural and rewilded coastal wetlands, including salt marshes and seagrass meadows.
- Develop and evaluate restoration actions for seagrass and salt-marsh habitats based on scientific evidence and stakeholder feedback.
- Integrate stakeholder knowledge into rewilding and restoration strategies, assessing feasibility, social acceptance, and prioritization of interventions.
- Assess temporal dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions following restoration to inform climate-change mitigation strategies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary research tasks within the REWRITE Project, collaborating with international partners.
- Contribute to technical-scientific reports and scientific publications related to project findings.
- Engage in communication and dissemination activities to promote project outcomes.
