Overview

This PhD position at Leiden University’s Institute for History focuses on the understudied relationship between European Muslims and the European Union. The project, funded by NOW Open-L, investigates how European Muslims—defined as self-identifying Muslims with EU citizenship—conceptualize and negotiate their sense of belonging to the EU. The research will examine institutional, transnational, and societal dimensions of belonging, including political mobilisation, litigation, and collective action. The successful candidate will contribute to a comparative study across Bulgaria, France, and the Netherlands, using qualitative and digital methods to analyse how European Muslims actively shape EU politics and citizenship. The position offers a multidisciplinary approach, combining EU studies, social movement theory, and discourse analysis.
