Overview

Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the Atomic Scale Processing group in the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science. The project focuses on depositing and characterising thin‑film catalysts by atomic layer deposition for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in anion‑exchange‑membrane electrolyzers. The researcher will design ALD processes, perform extensive physicochemical and electrochemical characterisation, and develop testing protocols, while publishing results in international venues. Collaboration with postdoctoral researchers, ERC project members and external partners is integral, and the position offers opportunities for conference travel and research mobility. Successful candidates will receive a two‑year salaried contract with the possibility of extension based on progress.

What you'll do

  • Deposit thin‑film electrocatalyst materials using atomic layer deposition and develop new ALD processes when needed.
  • Characterise film composition, crystallinity and morphology with spectroscopic, microscopic and X‑ray techniques.
  • Perform electrochemical testing for HER and OER, creating and optimising test protocols.
  • Analyse operando behaviour of catalysts or conduct laboratory‑scale electrolyzer experiments as required.
  • Prepare and present research findings at conferences and in peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Collaborate with postdoctoral researchers, ERC project members and international partners to advance the project.
