PhD Student Scholarship in Antarctic Bottom Water Variability
Investigate deep ocean overturning circulation and Antarctic Bottom Water variability using cutting-edge Deep Argo float arrays.
Best for:Best for aspiring marine researchers with strong quantitative analysis skills and an interest in ocean circulation and climate change.
Overview
The University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies is offering a PhD scholarship to study Antarctic Bottom Water and deep ocean overturning circulation. The project combines historical datasets with innovative ocean observing technologies, including Deep Argo profiling floats and recent marine voyage data, to analyze changes in global climate processes. The successful candidate will work closely with leading oceanographers to process high-resolution spatial and temporal measurements from the Southern Ocean. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in oceanography, marine science, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
What you'll do
- Analyze multi-year observational datasets from Deep Argo profiling floats deployed in the Australian Antarctic Basin.
- Integrate historical oceanographic data with new in-situ measurements from research voyages.
- Investigate spatial and temporal variability in Antarctic Bottom Water formation and export.
- Evaluate ocean ventilation processes and deep overturning circulation dynamics.
- Contribute to scientific publications and present research findings at academic conferences.
Requirements
