PhD Candidate: Cognitive Cost-Benefit Analysis of Cued Speech Perception
Explore the cognitive effort of Cued Speech in quiet and noisy environments for hearing-impaired individuals.
Best for:Best for cognitive psychology researchers with expertise in experimental design, psychophysiology, and an interest in auditory perception and assistive technologies.
Overview
This PhD position at the Center for Research in Cognition & Neurosciences (ULB) investigates how manual gestures in Cued Speech (CS) affect listening effort in hearing-impaired individuals, including those with cochlear implants. The project will use objective (pupillometry, dual-task paradigms) and subjective (Likert scales) measures to assess listening effort across three participant groups: cochlear implant users who use CS, hearing CS experts, and hearing individuals unfamiliar with CS. The successful candidate will design experiments, collect and analyze data, and collaborate with the research team to disseminate findings for clinical recommendations. The position offers enrollment in the ULB doctoral school and participation in research, publication, and communication activities.
What you'll do
- Design and conduct experiments to measure listening effort using objective (pupillometry, dual-task paradigms) and subjective (Likert scales) measures.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from three participant groups: cochlear implant users, hearing CS experts, and hearing individuals unfamiliar with CS.
- Collaborate closely with the research team to develop experimental protocols and interpret findings.
- Participate in research, publication, and communication activities, including presenting results at conferences and publishing in academic journals.
- Enroll in the ULB doctoral school and complete a PhD thesis as part of the project.
- Disseminate research findings to inform clinical recommendations for Cued Speech use.
