PhD Studentship: Organ-on-Chip Technology for Salmonella Persistence
Investigate how non-typhoidal Salmonella establishes persistent host infections using advanced Organ-on-Chip technology and bacterial genomics.
Best for:Best for biology or life science graduates with an interest in host-pathogen interactions, microbiology, and innovative in vitro infection models.
Overview
This fully funded four-year PhD studentship at the Quadram Institute Bioscience, University of East Anglia, investigates the mechanisms behind persistent Salmonella infections. The project combines bacterial genomics, host-pathogen biology, and dynamic Organ-on-Chip technology to model intestinal, hepatic, immune, and gallbladder niches. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive interdisciplinary training in computational and experimental infection biology, alongside cohort-based professional development and a three-month professional internship. Applicants are expected to hold a strong Bachelor's degree and have a keen interest in infection microbiology and advanced in vitro models.
What you'll do
- Develop comparative infection models representing various tissue environments using static cell cultures and dynamic Organ-on-Chip technologies.
- Investigate host environments that promote bacterial survival, adaptation, and persistent population emergence.
- Apply bacterial genomics and high-resolution imaging to analyse host-microbe interactions.
- Participate in cohort-based training, professional development, and transferable skills programmes.
- Undertake a funded three-month professional internship in a non-academic setting such as industry, policy, or science communication.
