Postdoctoral Fellow in High-Speed AFM and Nanobiology (Umeda Lab, Kanazawa University)
Join a pioneering lab to advance super-high-speed AFM imaging and nanoscale force mapping of biomolecules.
Best for:Best for postdocs with a background in AFM, biophysics, or structural biology who are eager to innovate high-speed imaging techniques and explore uncharted biological samples.
Overview
This postdoctoral position is based in the newly established Umeda Lab at Kanazawa University’s Nano Life Science Institute. The lab focuses on pushing the boundaries of high-speed atomic force microscopy (AFM), achieving imaging speeds exceeding 100 fps, and developing 3D force mapping techniques to probe biomolecular mechanics at sub-molecular resolution. The successful candidate will contribute to imaging and nanomechanical characterization of novel biological samples, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration within a diverse, international research environment. The role emphasizes hands-on experimentation, publication, and conference presentations while integrating with global research networks.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply high-speed AFM techniques to achieve super-resolution imaging of biomolecules at speeds exceeding 100 fps.
- Conduct nanoscale force mapping experiments to characterize mechanical properties of biomolecules at sub-molecular resolution.
- Prepare novel biological samples for AFM imaging, with a focus on unexplored or uncharacterized samples.
- Collaborate with international researchers within the Nano Life Science Institute and beyond to advance interdisciplinary projects.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international conferences.
- Contribute to experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation in a collaborative research environment.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in AFM, biophysics, structural biology, or a related field (or expected by the time of employment)
Language: English; proficiency required for collaboration with international researchers
Instruction: Japanese (primary) and English (for international collaboration)
- Experience in AFM or related nanoscale imaging techniques (not strictly required but preferred for hands-on engagement).
- Background in biophysics, structural biology, or a related field with a focus on biomolecular characterization.
- Strong motivation and enthusiasm for high-speed AFM imaging and nanoscale force mapping.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an international research environment.
- Proficiency in English for communication with international collaborators.
- Open to both international and Japanese applicants, with a preference for women to promote gender diversity.
- No restrictions on nationality or residency.
