PhD on Defect Nucleation and Fracture in SmartCut Processes
Investigate crystalline defect nucleation and control fracture dynamics in microelectronic substrate manufacturing.
Best for:Best for materials scientists and physicists with a background in microelectronics and surface characterization.
Overview
This doctoral position at Université Grenoble Alpes, in collaboration with LETI and Soitec, focuses on understanding and controlling defect nucleation during the SmartCut™ microelectronic fabrication process. The researcher will investigate how crystalline defects such as platelets influence post-fracture surface roughness and work on novel manufacturing processes to control nucleation. The successful candidate is expected to perform experimental characterization, develop advanced surface analysis protocols, and optimize silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate states. This project offers an exciting opportunity to bridge fundamental solid-state physics with industrial semiconductor applications.
What you'll do
- Investigate the physical phenomena underlying the SmartCut™ fracture stage and substrate fabrication
- Analyze the evolution of crystalline defects and their direct impact on post-fracture surface roughness
- Develop and refine advanced post-fracture surface analysis protocols
- Design and test new processes to control defect nucleation and optimize substrate quality
- Collaborate closely with industrial partner Soitec to align academic findings with industrial applications
- Prepare scientific publications, technical reports, and present findings at international conferences
