Doctoral and Postdoctoral Positions in Hybrid Magnonics-Photonics
Join a cutting-edge project at Aalto University to explore quantum transduction and entanglement via magnonics-photonics hybrids.
Best for:Best for researchers with expertise in magnonics, quantum technology, superconducting circuits, optics, or materials science, seeking to contribute to quantum transduction and entanglement research in a multidisciplinary environment.
Overview
Aalto University invites highly motivated doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to contribute to a groundbreaking project integrating superconducting qubits, magnons, and photoluminescent spin ions on a single chip. This interdisciplinary work focuses on developing hybrid quantum systems for efficient microwave-to-optical quantum transduction and magnon-mediated entanglement. The positions span three research topics: (1) strongly coupled magnon-microwave-photon-qubit hybrids in 3D magnetic fields, (2) hybrid quantum materials for photoluminescent spin-ion-magnon coupling, and (3) optical multimode-fibre imaging at deep cryogenic temperatures. Researchers will collaborate in a well-equipped laboratory with access to advanced instrumentation for film growth, magnetic/optical characterisation, and nanofabrication. The project is based in the Nanomagnetism and Spintronics group within the Department of Applied Physics, offering opportunities for high-impact research and publication.
What you'll do
- Develop high-Q superconducting microwave cavities on garnet substrates and integrate them with transmon circuits for hybrid quantum systems.
- Optimize magnetic-field resilience in superconducting resonators and nanostructures for qubit-magnon coupling.
- Explore and characterize multiple material systems for efficient magnon-spin-ion coupling using advanced spectroscopy techniques.
- Design and fabricate integrated high-Q optical cavities for millikelvin operation and develop fibre-to-chip coupling schemes.
- Construct and adapt a cryogenic imaging platform based on multimode-fibre holography for deep cryogenic temperature applications.
- Perform spatially resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and single-photon-sensitive detection for optical addressing of spin ions.
- Collaborate with a quantum-circuits group to advance qubit–magnon coupling and entanglement experiments.
- Publish high-impact research findings in leading scientific journals and disseminate results at international conferences.
