PhD Position: β-catenin Inhibition in Colorectal Cancer Models
Functional testing of novel β-catenin inhibitors in colorectal cancer using in vitro and in vivo models.
Best for:Best for biomedical scientists with hands-on experience in cell/organoid culture, molecular biology, and a passion for translational cancer research.
Overview
This PhD position at the Princess Maxima Center in Utrecht focuses on evaluating novel β-catenin inhibitors for colorectal cancer treatment. The project aims to test the efficacy and selectivity of these inhibitors on cancerous and normal cells using advanced in vitro (cell/organoid cultures) and in vivo (mouse models) approaches. The research will also involve genomic and transcriptomic profiling to identify cancer subtypes responsive to β-catenin inhibition, contributing to patient stratification for personalized treatment strategies. The work is part of a broader MSCA Doctoral Network, integrating functional testing with clinical relevance through collaboration with medical partners.
What you'll do
- Test the efficacy and selectivity of novel β-catenin inhibitors on normal and cancerous cells using in vitro cultures (cell lines/organoids) and in vivo mouse models.
- Conduct genomic and transcriptomic profiling to identify cancer subtypes responsive to β-catenin inhibition.
- Develop and characterize in vitro cell lines, organoids, and epithelioid cultures from mouse and human epithelial tissues.
- Use lineage tracing, in vivo tumor models, and spatial imaging to evaluate compound delivery, efficacy, and selectivity.
- Collaborate with clinical partners to ensure access to patient material and translate findings into clinically relevant strategies.
- Perform a 3-month secondment at ULX for BRET assay of β-catenin interactions in human cancer cell models.
- Contribute to the overall research program by providing biological rationale for patient stratification and informing compound progression within the consortium.
