PhD Research Fellow in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
Three‑year PhD fellowship to develop interpretable machine‑learning models for cancer genomics at UiO’s EpiGen unit.
Best for:Highly motivated candidates with a master’s in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a quantitative discipline and strong programming and machine‑learning skills.
Overview
The University of Oslo invites applications for a three‑year PhD research fellowship in bioinformatics and computational biology, hosted by the Department of Clinical Molecular Biology (EpiGen) at the Ahus campus in Lørenskog. The fellow will join an interdisciplinary team to create biophysically interpretable machine‑learning models that combine transcription‑factor binding, epigenetic marks, and 3D genome organization to uncover functional long‑range regulatory interactions in cancer. Work will involve developing data‑mining and network‑analysis methods, integrating multi‑omics single‑cell data, and validating predictions with experimental assays. The project may include a 3–6‑month research visit to a US collaborator. Successful completion leads to a PhD thesis awarded by the University of Oslo.
What you'll do
- Develop biophysically interpretable machine‑learning models that integrate TF‑DNA interactions, epigenetic features, and 3D genome data.
- Design and implement data‑mining and network‑analysis pipelines to identify functional non‑coding mutations in cancer.
- Integrate multi‑omics data from single‑cell experiments to improve predictive accuracy and biological interpretability.
- Validate computational predictions using in‑vivo and in‑vitro experimental assays.
- Collaborate with researchers at UiO, Ahus, Oslo University Hospital and international partners, including a potential US research visit.
- Prepare and submit a PhD thesis based on the research outcomes.
- Document and present results in internal meetings and scientific publications.
