PhD in Numerical Modelling in Geology
Explore lithospheric processes and sedimentary basin evolution using thermomechanical modelling for natural resource exploration.
Best for:Best for geology PhD candidates with expertise in numerical modelling, thermomechanics, and sedimentary basin analysis, interested in interdisciplinary research on natural resource exploration.
Overview
This PhD position focuses on numerical modelling of lithospheric-scale processes to understand how initial structure and thermal state influence stratigraphic and thermal evolution in foreland basins. The research will apply coupled thermomechanical and surface-process models to study the Aquitaine Basin, a well-constrained retro-Pyrenean foreland. The project is part of the PEPR IDYLLE initiative, investigating thermal flux, lithospheric density, and their impacts on sediment transport, stratigraphic architecture, and natural resource distribution (e.g., hydrogen, geothermal energy). The successful candidate will work at GET (Géosciences Environnement Toulouse), collaborating with leading researchers in geology, geophysics, and sedimentary basin analysis.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply coupled thermomechanical and surface-process models to simulate lithospheric-scale processes in the Aquitaine Basin.
- Investigate the impact of inherited extensional deformation on sediment transport systems, stratigraphic architecture, and thermal evolution of foreland basins.
- Analyze and interpret geological data to constrain model parameters and validate simulation results.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate thermal, fluid, and sedimentary data within the PEPR IDYLLE project framework.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to the broader objectives of the IDYLLE initiative, focusing on natural resource exploration and geological potential.
