Research Associate in CO₂ Mineralisation and Process Scale-Up (Ureaka)
Develop scalable CO₂ mineralisation processes for low-carbon construction materials and pilot integration.
Best for:Best for chemical or process engineers with hands-on laboratory/pilot experience, strong problem-solving skills, and a background in multiphase systems or CO₂ capture/utilisation.
Overview
This postdoctoral position at the University of Strathclyde focuses on advancing CO₂ mineralisation technology to create low-carbon construction materials from cement and mineral waste. Based in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, the role involves leading experimental development, process design, and equipment troubleshooting for an integrated pilot system. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Ureaka’s founder and academic team to scale up laboratory findings, ensuring safe, evidence-based technical outcomes. The position offers high ownership and the potential to transition into a senior technical role within the spinout company, subject to performance and recruitment processes.
What you'll do
- Lead experimental development and de-risking of CO₂ mineralisation processes for low-carbon construction materials.
- Design and troubleshoot equipment for leaching, carbonation, gas handling, solid-liquid separation, and reagent recovery.
- Establish mass and energy balances, interpret uncertain data, and contribute to process-flow diagrams and equipment specifications.
- Collaborate with researchers, PhD students, industrial partners, and suppliers to coordinate material characterisation and testing.
- Provide technical direction for process design, milestones, intellectual property, and commercial validation.
- Contribute to technical strategy, funding applications, and company formation processes.
- Ensure safe and evidence-based integration of the pilot system.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline (or close to completion with award pending).
Language: English (proficiency sufficient for academic and technical communication)
Instruction: English
- Hands-on laboratory or pilot experience, particularly with multiphase systems.
- Strong fundamentals in chemical or process engineering.
- Experience with CO₂ capture, utilisation, or separation processes (desirable but not essential).
