MSCA PhD Position in Pharmaceutical Formulation and Machine Learning
Explore eutectic and amorphous drug formulations using graph-based machine learning and advanced thermal characterisation.
Best for:Best for graduate researchers with a background in computational chemistry or physics interested in machine learning applications for drug formulation.
Overview
This 3-year doctoral position is offered within the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network IDEAS at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. The successful candidate will investigate the phase behaviour of binary pharmaceutical mixtures to improve the stability and dissolution of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients. The project integrates data-driven molecular design, machine learning prediction models, and experimental techniques such as calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The candidate will also participate in secondments at the University of Silesia and Janssen Pharmaceutica, take doctoral courses, and contribute to scientific dissemination.
What you'll do
- Manage and execute an individual doctoral research project focused on eutectic and amorphous binary mixtures
- Develop and apply graph-based machine learning models to predict eutectic formulation compositions
- Construct experimental phase diagrams using differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and hot-stage microscopy
- Perform thermal and spectroscopic characterisation to evaluate solid-liquid equilibria and physical stability
- Write scientific research articles and complete a PhD thesis
- Participate in joint network training activities, international scientific conferences, and external research secondments
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching duties as required by the department
