Postdoctoral Position in Epidemiogenetics of Resistance to Coccidiosis
Investigate host-pathogen dynamics and genetic selection strategies for infectious disease resistance in livestock.
Best for:Best for quantitative geneticists or epidemiologists with strong statistical programming skills and a background in infectious disease modelling.
Overview
The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE) invites applications for a 24-month postdoctoral position within the Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology (GABI) unit located near Paris. Working inside the GeMS team, the successful candidate will contribute to the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) by analysing experimental datasets to study avian coccidiosis resistance in chickens. The research involves estimating epidemiological parameters using compartmental models, running predictive simulations, and disseminating findings through international conferences and peer-reviewed articles. The role offers a vibrant research environment with comprehensive social support and flexibility.
What you'll do
- Analyse complex experimental datasets to estimate epidemiological and production parameters for different chicken breeds using SIR-type infection dynamics models.
- Develop and execute simulation studies to evaluate the relationship between phenotyping effort and the precision of genetic evaluation for infectious disease traits.
- Compare host-response traits such as susceptibility, infectivity, duration of infection, tolerance, and compensatory growth between resistant and susceptible breeds.
- Collaborate within the EUPAHW consortium to align modeling frameworks with real-world livestock health data.
- Author scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences and consortium meetings.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in animal genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, computational biology or a related discipline
Language: English proficiency for scientific communication and collaboration
Instruction: English
Publications: Not explicitly specified, but publication of scientific articles is a core duty.
- Proficiency in statistical programming using R and/or Python
- Demonstrated ability to handle and process complex datasets
- Working knowledge of epidemiological compartmental modelling and/or quantitative genetics
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to conduct independent scientific research
- Rigorous methodological approach to data analysis and biological interpretation
- Hold a completed PhD degree in a relevant discipline
