Doctoral Position in Solid-State Transformer Development
Develop high-power medium-frequency transformers for advanced solid-state energy distribution systems at ETH Zurich.
Best for:Best for electrical engineering graduates with a strong background in power electronics, magnetic component design, and experimental prototyping.
Overview
The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded doctoral position focusing on the design, modeling, and optimisation of high-power solid-state transformers (SSTs) and medium-frequency transformers (MFTs). The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on multi-physics modeling, integration with photovoltaic and battery storage systems, and experimental validation of hardware prototypes. Responsibilities include formulating computationally efficient optimisation procedures, collaborating within an international team, and publishing findings at leading venues. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in electrical engineering and possess a strong foundation in power electronic converter systems.
What you'll do
- Conduct doctoral research on the modeling and optimisation of high-power Solid-State Transformers with an emphasis on Medium-Frequency Transformers.
- Investigate high-frequency and high-voltage MFTs for photovoltaic systems and medium-voltage grids.
- Integrate battery storage systems and manage dynamic power flow control between batteries and the electrical grid.
- Develop comprehensive multi-physics models addressing losses, thermal behavior, cooling, resonances, and electrical insulation.
- Optimise magnetic cores, windings, and cooling structures to enhance overall system efficiency, power density, and power transfer capabilities.
- Design, build, and experimentally validate MFT prototypes and complete power electronic converter systems.
- Integrate simulation models into computationally efficient optimisation frameworks in collaboration with research peers.
- Contribute to project deliverables and present research outcomes at international academic and industrial conferences.
