Overview

The Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) at the University of Freiburg offers a competitive international PhD programme funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry. This programme integrates research across disciplines such as developmental biology, neurosciences, immunology, and molecular medicine, leveraging collaborations with institutions like the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics and the CIBSS Cluster of Excellence. Doctoral fellows conduct experimental work in principal investigators' labs while benefiting from structured training, including seminars, practical courses in advanced technologies, and soft skills development. The programme operates entirely in English, with optional German courses for international students, and provides comprehensive support for settling in Germany, including accommodation assistance and visa guidance. Admission is highly selective, with candidates invited for interviews and thesis project presentations.
