Research Associate / Fellow on Spectrum Access Innovation
Join the Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol to research automated spectrum sharing and digital twins.
Best for:Best for researchers with a PhD in wireless communications or related fields, strong Python/C++ skills, and experience in software-defined radio or AI/ML-driven spectrum management.
Overview
The Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol is seeking two researchers (Grade I, J, or K) to investigate advanced spectrum access techniques, automated spectrum sharing, and digital twin technologies. The appointees will contribute directly to the JOINER and HASC projects, utilizing the JOINER National Spectrum Facility to develop intelligent monitoring infrastructure and experimental proof-of-concept models. Responsibilities involve analyzing complex datasets, testing wireless emulation systems across 5G/6G, Wi-Fi, and satellite platforms, and assessing regulatory policy implications. Candidates are expected to collaborate across disciplines, generate high-quality academic outputs, and help maintain national research infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Conduct research into spectrum access, sharing, and assignment using automated and intelligent methodologies.
- Collect and analyze spectrum data using JOINER's national monitoring infrastructure to identify usage patterns.
- Develop and test spectrum-sharing techniques via software-defined radio and wireless system emulation across 5G/6G, Wi-Fi, and satellite technologies.
- Apply machine learning and data-driven methods to spectrum management and contribute to a national spectrum digital twin.
- Support the development and operation of the JOINER National Spectrum Facility in collaboration with internal and external partners.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD or equivalent research experience in a relevant area (or a relevant postgraduate research degree and substantial research experience for Grade K)
Language: English
Instruction: English
Publications: Publication experience appropriate to the appointment level (expected for Grade J/K)
- Knowledge of spectrum assignment, allocation, policy, and regulatory frameworks
- Experience with RF systems, wireless technologies, and software-defined radio, including USRP or GNU Radio
- Strong programming and data analysis capabilities in Python, C++, or similar languages
- Understanding of AI/ML applications in spectrum management or time-series data analysis
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research, analyze results, and communicate findings through technical reports and papers
